Rhodonite, Betts Mine, Plainville, MA
This stone name comes from the Greek word, rhodon, meaning rose.
This is a natural stone showing many shades and varying intensities of pink in light to bright colors with streaks of charcoals and black colors from manganese oxide veins. A lovely mossy green color can occur as well, creating a very pretty color story. In Rhodonite, the additional color variations are sought out as desired and interesting specimens.
In ages past, huge quantities of rhodonite specimens were mined in the Ural Mountains in Russia. These massive pieces showed amazing crystals and were used to adorn the palaces of the Czars.
